Places of Interest in South Tyrol

Juval Castle near Naturns
The castle owned by extreme mountain climbing legend Reinhold Messner is definitely worth a visit. Here you will find: a mask collection from five continents, the world’s largest Tibetica collection and a gallery lined with mountain pictures. You can also visit the “cave of enlightenment“, the “house of trolls and gnomes“ and the “expedition basement“, where you can have a closer look at the mountain explorer’s equipment.

Säben Monastery above the town of Klausen
For over 300 years nuns of the Order of Saint Benedict have lived here in seclusion. Marienkapelle (Chapel of St. Mary), Liebfrauenkirche (Curch of our Lady), the abbey, the Jubiläumsbrunnen and the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche (Church of the Holy Cross) are definite must-sees.

Bletterbachschlucht near Aldein
Bletterbachschlucht is the largest gorge in South Tyrol. It lies at the foot of Weisshorn. Over millions of years the rocks have eroded so that today you can witness the various layers and actually see how the Domolites emerged. Simply standing between the walls of rock, which rise up to 20m-high, is exhilarating! There are also plans to create a dinosaur adventure trail for young and old in the near future...

Bozen Cathedral
1340 - 1500, gothic architecture.
This 65 m high gothic church tower was designed by the Swabian sculptor Hans Lutz von Schussenried (1501 - 1519).
Points of interests: the Romanesque portal, the rose window (1300), Madonna with Child fresco (1475), crucifixion fresco (1300) on the north side, the late gothic pulpit and the baroque high altar (1710).

Churburg Castle near Schluderns
Sitting at the entrance of the Matschertal Valley, the fortification’s architecture which reflects Roman and Gothic influence, date as far back as the Renaissance era. Inside the castle stands the imposing Statue of Madonna and headstones of the elite. The beautifully painted arcade with renaissance arches designed from Lass marble will certainly prove more than a mere cultural experience.

Trauttmansdorff Botanical Gardens
On the eastern outskirts of the town of Meran lies a 12 hectare botanical garden divided into 11 pavilions. The garden offers a round-the-world trip of flora on our planet. The Sun Garden: Plants from the Mediterranean, the southern slopes feature the most northern olive grove in Italy. The Water and Terrace Garden: includes a formal Italian garden and an English shrub garden. Landscape South Tyrol: A slice of the South Tyrol’s natural and cultural landscape, from mountain summits to the deepest valleys. Forest Garden: Deciduous and coniferous tress from Asia and America.

Merano Thermal Baths
Opened in December 2005, the Merano Thermal Baths offer a special attraction to visitors. The new spa centre is designed for complete relaxation, recuperation and is guaranteed to stimulate all the senses. The water contains radon and is used for various therapies. The bath’s steam creates a soothing effect, flowing through the mucous membrane and liberating the respiratory tract. This makes it ideal for treating bronchitis and lung illnesses. This hot springs containing brine and sulphur has been rediscovered. The water’s numerous valuable minerals and its 33° Celsius temperature make a visit to the baths a pleasant experience, especially in winter.
