Places of Interest in Tyrol

Innsbruck (Tyrol’s Capital)
Innsbruck is the economic, administrative and cultural centre of western Austria. It has a two-seasonal tourist industry (over 1 million visitors) and is a well-known congress and university town. Innsbruck played host to the 1964 and 1976 winter Olympic Games. Places of interest include the old town, particularly the “goldenes Dachl” (golden roof of a splendid renaissance building), the local stores and the nearby Ambras Castle and Alpine Zoo.

Swarovski’s Crystal World ( Swarovski Kristallwelten )
The global concern Swarovski was founded and still has its head office in Wattens near Innsbruck. Experience the phenomenon of crystal. Andre Heller, the architect, has designed a crystal world that arouses all the senses. Children and adult eyes will glow!

Ötzi’s Village-Umhausen
Ötztal in the stone age: The historic discovery of Ötzi - the 5,300-year-old mummified stone age man - in 1991 and subsequent scientific research have made it possible to create and authentic representation of daily life in an alpine settlement in the early stone age. The open air archaeological museum has items of interest for children and adults, alike. Not far from the stone age museum gushes the waters of Stuibenfall - Tyrol’s largest waterfall.

Alpine-Coaster Imst
Speed junkies will be delighted to hear that Imst has just managed to erect a spectacular 3.5 kilometre alpine roller coaster track. The 3.535 metre-long run lasts 10 -12 min and is even designed to operate in less-than-pleasant weather. In the event of heavy downpour (rain, snow, etc), special hoods are fitted onto the Alpine Coaster’s cars. Alpine Coaster rides at Imst are therefore guaranteed all year round!

The Fortress of Kufstein
The district of Kufstein is crowned by its landmark fortress overlooking the city. The building is first mentioned in annals in 1205. Today the historic courtyard hosts variety cultural and festive events. It also houses a fortress, local history museum, restaurant and many other interesting rooms.

Panorama Paintings-Innsbruck
The popular 19th century panorama paintings in Innsbruck are the last surviving examples of this art form in Austria. The artist, Zeno Diemer, depicts Tyrolean freedom fighters of 1809 on a 1000m² canvas. The panoramic artwork skilfully captures scenes of battle and the mood of the period.
