St. Veit in the summer: Take off to the mountain bike and hiking paradise
The Defereggental in East Tyrol, in the Hohe Tauern National Park, forms one of the most popular holiday regions in Austria, together with the 3 communities Hopfgarten, St. Veit and St. Jakob. It is ideal for walkers and hikers who want to go on discoveries on safe routes - watch for example the golden eagle hunting! The Hohe Tauern National Park is one of the most magnificent landscapes on earth and is home to thousands of animal and plant species. You will find over two hundred 3000 meter peaks, glaciers, mountain lakes and magnificent waterfalls in this area.
The Jagdhaus alps in Defereggen are incomparable as the oldest witnesses of peasant farming: They are made of stone and were first mentioned in the 13th Century. Inside the valley there are forests such as the Oberhauser Zirbenwald - the largest closed Swiss stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps.
But you cannot only explore the valley on foot - the Defereggental is a paradise for tour bikers and mountain bikers: On bike paths along the Isel and Drau or in steep terrain. It does not need to be mentioned that climbing in this region with challenging routes, great passages and spectacular views is a wonderful first class mountain experience.
However, the offer for your East Tyrol holidays is much greater: With golf, rafting, canyoning, kayaking, swimming in the natural lake or in the outdoor pool, fishing and so on, you can draw on plentiful resources.
